National Archives Database (SE)

http://www.nad.riksarkivet.se/

The NAD in Sweden offers filter options for search results, but not before entering the search. The database differs 4 main options: Archive (with sub-options Type & Provenance), Register, Institution, Location. Within an option the facets are ordered hierarchical. Each facet displayed shows the number of hits. As the datastructure behind is supposed to be EAD, the cluster can be used for APE as well.

Astia (FI)

https://astia.narc.fi/

The Finish archives database offers 2 filter option for search results: Provenance and Institution. The option for institution includes "digital material" due to the idea of specifying the location where the archival material can be used.

Before entering the search user can specify the time span in a timeline with a slider.

The timeline could be a nice tool for action on the portal.

Archives de l'Aube

http://www.archives-aube.fr
The French archive offers a browsing by facets. User cannot enter a search term but filter all possible results with 5 options: Location, Person, Subject, Time period and Techniques. Location, time period and techniques have sub-option. In some options facets can be searched by term. Besides all facets are listed in alphabetical order. Each option and facet displayed shows the number of hits.
The offered classifications can be useful for APE.

Feedback tools

Trove forum for genealogy

http://trove.nla.gov.au/forum/forumdisplay.php?16-Genealogy

Registered users can question and answer to help each other. I am not sure if this is the right place to post, but this aspect seems to be missing in our discussion (i.e. the user community function) The is fairly simple, and not innovative at all, but it is closely tied with social tagging and feedback, after all Web2.0, and it is what users and archivists may think very helpful. There might be an idea to inetegrate various functions (forum, tag, feedback forms, research space, wiki etc) into one, or to link each other.

Personal research space

Description

How to use in APEx?

Kulturpool personal blog space
www.kulturpool.at/display/smartworks/Giorgione+%281477-1510%29
Austrian portal offers blog space for the users  Registered users can have their own blog space, using the materials from the web and can be published and shared it with others visitors. This is worth a consideration for educational possibility and more.

BASYS-Invenio (no URL): personal "Shopping cart"

Archival database of the Bundesarchiv for research available for applied users & archivists. Only usable inside the Bundesarchiv (reading rooms, offices).

Registered users can save single archival descriptions from their search results. The list can be converted into PDF, which can be mailed to the users address and can be printed. Files/items on the "shopping cart" (literally translated: notepad) can be ordered. Single archival descriptions can be viewed in their archival context (holdings guide).

Example for a rather basic use of personal research space.

MICHAEL Culture Project of Cultural Heritage in Europe

http://www.michael-culture.org

Document depositing service offered by the MICHAEL project.

Registered users can deposit & publish own files on their workspace. The creation of digital & physical collections, institutions, service and projects is possible. Files can be uploaded from hard disc or from URL. Documents (text, image, sound, video) and collections can be described and shared with user, staff and public. Searches can be saved.

Without knowing the service in detail I think it is a personal research space I would expect from a cultural heritage portal (of course without the bugs).

The prometheus Image Archive

http://prometheus-bildarchiv.de/en/

Metasearch engine for several image databases of memory institutions

Prometheus is not free, users need to pay 20 €/year with 1 test week for free

Registered users can create collections and presentations for selected images. Images & metadata (descriptions) can be downloaded (single, collection, presentation, search results...). Created collections / presentations can be published (only read or modify) or stored for private use. Users can comment single images and collections/presentations. Comments can be subscribed via RSS.

Well done example for personal research space tailored for images. Very useful feature: download of metadata as text file.

The Nat. Archives of Estonia Virtual Research Lab(VAU)

http://www.ra.ee/vau

Estonian archival portal provides functionality to create and manage small databases and a linkbook.

Registered users can bookmark links to materials of interest, organize them into categories and share with other users or groups. Also create small databases with certain limitations in size and data types used. To automate the process .csv files would be used to upload the data.

The Storify environment

http://storify.com/

Allows users to tell stories by collecting updates from social networks.

Registered users after associating their account with the Storify environment can share interactive stories consisting of media from various social networks.

gahetNA - Friends of the national archives (NL)

http://www.gahetna.nl

The national archives of the Netherlands to publish questions, transcriptions and reactions to archival material.

Registered users can contact archivists as well as other users to communicate about topics and archival material. They can participate in indexing handwritten text, asking and answering questions and give feedback about the descriptions.

Archives de l'Aube

http://www.archives-aube.fr

The French archives de l'Aube allows users to transcribe handwritten texts and tag texts for indexing. Besides this page has a beautiful design!

Registered users can use the virtual workspace with saved searchs and search results. By registering again to the speacial services for transcription and tagging users can participate in working on archival descriptions.

Monasterium

http://www.monasterium.net/

The portal contains digitised charters and descriptions from archives across Europe. The personal research space allows users to participate in editing and indexing of the charters.

The main goal of the personal work space in Monasterium is the crowdsourcing idea. However users can save the description for their own use or ask the chosen moderators/editors to publish the information. Monasterium uses a self-developed editing tool to encode the transcriptions in CEI (Charters Encoding Intitiative).

Linked Open Data

LifeRay module for Linked Open Data

http://www.imc.com.gr/web/imc/liferay-linked-data

LifeRay database can be published as RDF via D2R Server. LifeRay is the CRM being developed for the new APE Portal. It is still unknown how indexed and DB data can be connected to LifeRay DB (@Bastiaan, is it the same?), but there can be a good possibility to make Linked Open Data very smooth in this framework. Mapping from APE EAD XML to RDF would be an issue.

Drupal RDF extention

http://drupal.org/project/rdf

Publish RDF out of Drupal Not APE oriented at the moment, but if we switch LifeRay to Drupal in future, this is very handy.

Semantic Media Wiki (SMW)

http://semantic-mediawiki.org

MediaWiki with Semantic capabilities, including RDF export and SPARQL endpoint

Unfortunately wiki does not get much attention of archivists, but I see it as a great potential of collaborative research for archives. There are some projects in this area, though. If structured wikis like SMW becomes a standard, Wikipedia automatically becomes DBpedia, thus, LOD can be more automated even via wiki style. This entry is closely related to tagging and User Generated Content (UGC) in relation to Semantic Web. in APEx, more investigation is needed if wiki and/or tagging can be somehow associated with this type of UGC LOD on top of EAD LOD. A big challenge.

Firefox add-on Semantic tech from Calais

No relation to APEx, but this is a good example of what Semantic Web can do for the users. For your inspiration.
